Founded in 1731, the San Fernando Cathedral stands as the oldest active cathedral in the United States. Though the building has been enlarged considerably throughout the years, the walls of the original church function as the Cathedral's sanctuary today. Exhibiting ornate Gothic architecture, beautiful stained-glass windows as well as a baptismal font said to be a gift from Charles III from Spain, the cathedral attracts some 5,000 participants weekly to its well-loved weekend masses. Located in San Antonio's Main Plaza Historic District, the cathedral lies just minutes from the legendary Alamo.
